VICE President Joice Mujuru yesterday visited Sam Levy’s home in Avondale, Harare, to pay her condolences.

While consoling Levy’s widow, Gloria, and her children — Julia, Isaacs, Maurice and Raymond — and other relatives, VP Mujuru said the country had lost a pillar.

Levy, who owned the upmarket Sam Levy Village in Borrowdale, was one of the wealthiest people in Zimbabwe.

“We feel we have lost a pillar, but there is little we can do,” she said.

“That is why we came here to grieve with the Levy family.”

VP Mujuru -- who was accompanied by her three daughters, Kumbirai, Chipo and Nyasha — said the Mujuru and Levy families were close.

She said there was friendship between her late husband General Solomon Mujuru and Levy.

“The General and Sam were best friends,” said VP Mujuru.

“If you remember, Sam is the one who assisted the General when he was involved in a helicopter crash and broke his vertebrae when he was still in the army.

“He introduced him to the best surgeons in South Africa and he assisted in paying some of the medical bills. So, the friendship between the two families grew stronger and stronger.”

VP Mujuru said Levy had given her late husband a second life.

“This is why we came to grieve with the Levys and give them moral support,” she said.

Media, Information and Publicity Minister Webster Shamu described Levy as a “hardworking and shrewd businessman”.

“In spite of his vast wealth and station in life, Mr Levy found it easy to build bridges with people from all walks of life,” he said.

“He was a man who was always full of humour and willing to help anyone regardless of the colour of their skin.”

Minister Shamu said Levy had a determined and shrewd way of surmounting challenges and outmanoeuvring competitors in his business operations.

He said that was why he managed to build a business empire that is the envy of other entrepreneurs in the country.

“There is no doubt that everyone of us can feel the heartache caused by his sudden death which no one can heal,” said Minister Shamu.

“Although nothing can bring him back, we all find strength and comfort in the wonderful work that remains behind as a symbol of his glorious life which we should all celebrate and relive everyday of our lives.”

Minister Shamu said Levy led a glorious life that left an indelible imprint in many people’s lives.

“On behalf of the Zanu-PF Department of the Commissariat, the Ministry of Media, Information and Publicity, on behalf of my family, and on my own behalf, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his wife, Mrs Gloria Levy, his children Isaacs, Maurice, Raymond and Julia as well as his seven grandchildren on the tragic loss of one so loved and cherished,” he said

Other Zimbabweans posted their condolences on The Herald Online.

Mr Raymond Tigere posted: “May your soul rest in peace. Baba Levy true patriot.”

Another post by Albert read: “Sam was a hardworking man. May his soul rest in peace.”

Muzemba said: “Indeed we have lost a patriotic citizen. RIP Sir Levy.”

Levy will be buried today at the Jewish Cemetery at Warren Hills.
